Kalavu

Kalavu, a Kannada word, means theft. This is considered as one of the sixty-four arts. It is as old as the birth of civilization itself, adopted by some as either profession or hobby. Though at the outset it may appear as anti establishment tradition, basically it is an act of resistance against the unhealthy accumulation of wealth and resources. This is the character which makes one look at thieving art will inquisitor curiosity. That is why the various forms of thieving or stealing have remained as thrilling memories. We may recall here the discourse given by Sharvilaka of “Mricchakatikam” (A classical play by poet Shwdraka) regarding the various cultural dimension as well as local and geographical limits. Put in the process of modernization, along with the social and human life, the thieving art also her undergone various stages of metamorphosis. In this context of globalization, just as every part of life, thieving art also is commercialized.
